There are two great challenges in building a website from scratch. Coding and Design. Technical and Presentational. Unobservable and Completely Observable.
Although the coding is indeed a challenge as fun as a Soduko puzzle, the most interesting to think about is the Design. I get to flex some creative muscles that I’m still learning and think I have a knack for.
The reader has a purpose, he/she wouldn’t have visited www.benjaminbarlow.com without one. It is to read my musings, see my photography, or to get to know me for professional consideration. The design theme for this website (or as it exists at this writing) is simplicity and to present that content as efficiently as possible. In other words, Content is King. I have three types of content, musings, photography, and my resume, to address each of those purposes. Each is accessible through simple navigation.
Other design trends I have tried to employ is good use of whitespace, flat design, responsive design, and simple color. All towards simplicity.
I spend a lot of time looking at various websites and reading various Design blogs/articles to learn what is going on and different ways of thinking about design. I believe the accumulation of knowledge leads to more creativity. The more you know about the strategy of football, for example, the more creative the play calling can be. So as time goes, so will this site. It will evolve for sure.
